AJ Retrofit Award Winner: The Smithson

The Smithson has won an AJ Retrofit Award in the Offices 2,000-5,000m² category.

The revitalisation of the building was carefully carried out in the knowledge that the building is the largest in the Charity Commission’s property portfolio, and therefore needed to be a success and a long-term building of good standing. The redevelopment has been branded The Smithson to acknowledge Clerkenwell’s industrial history. The overall building reflects the vibrancy and spectrum of activity in the area. The concept was to express the existing building and structure alongside the use of an innovative selection of timeless, new materials.

Portfolio Manager, Angy Benitz from Savills Investment Management stated

“Securing Macmillan Publishers as the anchor tenant is testament to the architectural design of the building and innovative configuration of the space which appealed to Macmillan’s desire for a creative and collaborative office environment.”
